Multiple myeloma is a malignant disease involving the plasma cell. The disease frequently spreads from the bone marrow into bones which can lead to pain and fractures. Abnormal proteins are usually present in both blood and urine. Kidney failure may develop from deposits of myeloma protein in the kidney and from high blood calcium levels. The abnormal protein production interferes with proper production of antibodies and dangerous infections may occur. Chemotherapy agents have ameliorated the disease but have been unable to bring about cures.
